Stop Smoking Poster

Stop Smoking Poster

The NHS website has a wide range of information about smoking and how it effects your body, how passive smoking effects you and also how smoking whilst pregnant can effect you. http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/2344.aspx?CategoryID=53#

Smoking is one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the UK.

Every year around 100,000 people in the UK die from smoking, with many more living with debilitating smoking-related illnesses.

Smoking increases your risk of developing more than 50 serious health conditions. Some may be fatal and others can cause irreversible long-term damage to your health.

You can become ill:

  • if you smoke yourself
  • through other people’s smoke (passive smoking)

Smoking health risks

Smoking causes about 90% of lung cancers. It also causes cancer in many other parts of the body, including the:

  • mouth
  • lips
  • throat
  • voice box (larynx)
  • oesophagus (the tube between your mouth and stomach)
  • bladder
  • kidney
  • liver
  • stomach
  • pancreas

Smoking damages your heart and your blood circulation, increasing your risk of developing conditions such as:

  • coronary heart disease
  • heart attack
  • stroke
  • peripheral vascular disease (damaged blood vessels)
  • cerebrovascular disease (damaged arteries that supply blood to your brain)

Smoking also damages your lungs, leading to conditions such as:

  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which incorporates bronchitis andemphysema
  • pneumonia

Smoking can also worsen or prolong the symptoms of respiratory conditions such as asthma, or respiratory tract infections such as the common cold.

In men, smoking can cause impotence because it limits the blood supply to the penis. It can also reduce the fertility of both men and women.

Health risks of passive smoking

Secondhand smoke comes from the tip of a lit cigarette and the smoke that the smoker breathes out.

Breathing in secondhand smoke – also known as passive smoking – increases your risk of getting the same health conditions as smokers. For example, breathing in secondhand smoke increases a non-smoker’s risk of developing lung cancer by about a quarter.

Babies and children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of secondhand smoke. A child who is exposed to passive smoke is at increased risk of developing chest infections, meningitis, a persistent cough and, if they have asthma, their symptoms will get worse. They’re also at increased risk of cot death and an ear infection called glue ear.

Health risks of smoking during pregnancy

If you smoke when you’re pregnant, you put your unborn baby’s health at risk, as well as your own. Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of complications such as:

  • miscarriage
  • premature (early) birth
  • a low birth weight baby
  • stillbirth

Facts About Smoking

This is the information which the pharmacy students provided us with, i scanned through their provided information and highlighted the bits that i thought might possible be useful for a stop smoking poster. I managed to pick out the amount it would cost to smoke and also the information about the chemical that are used inside a cigarette.

  • More than 120,000 people die each year from diseases caused by smoking. If you smoke 10 cigarettes a day, on average you will save:
  • £7.09 a day, £50 a week, £213 a month, £2588 a year
  • Stoptober is an NHS campaign to encourage people to stop smoking throughout October. Approximately 10 million adults in Britain that smoke cigarettes. Research found that if you stop smoking for 28 days, you are 5 times more likely to quit for good.
  • Cigarette smoke contains over 4000 chemicals. Many of these are poisonous and over 60 of them are cancer causing.

From the sources that the pharmacy students have given us, i will only take very few ideas from them. The more simple the poster is, the more effective it becomes. I will use space to make it effective with block colours so that it is easy on the eye and makes more of an impact than something jam packed with information. Some facts that would be helpful for the poster would be something to do with the amount of money that is wasted on people smoking and also the chemicals in the cigarette smoke also being carcinogenic. There were a lot of good ideas on their posters but i would like to focus on very little of it to male it more effective.

This was my poster that didn’t really have a colour scheme because i was unsure to add colors to make it look more appealing.

I got the colour scheme from a separate image from the actual BREAKOUT game where every 3 or so layers of bricks will have a new colour. This is so i do not mix so many colours into the image so it stays simple.

Task 1 – Ideas for the animation

My ideas for my stop smoking poster were things such as:

  • I wanted to have a cigarette with text coming out of the smoke. This gave me an opportunity to say what smoking can not only do to you but to others too. For example, inhaling someone else’s cigarette smoke can cause secondary cancer, making it harmful to others too.
  • I wanted to have just a piggy bank on a blank poster with a cigarette next to it and it shows that the inside of the piggy bank is empty because its to show that you wont have as much money if you smoke.
  • Another idea i had was to have a central picture of someone leaning on a gravestone of an empty grave while they are smoking. This gives off the impression that you’re only awaiting your own death.
  • Another idea was to make a breakout style game where the cigarette is the block that hits the ball back up, which is destroying the lungs in the style of bricks. Im wanting to say the tag line should say something along the lines of ‘You’re only breaking yourself’ or ‘You’re only destroying yourself’.

Task 1 – Planning for the animation

The idea i have chosen is the breakout style poster because it is quite simple but also effective. I chose this idea because i found that the idea of breaking yourself and showing you’re in control of the cigarette becomes more personal  people that smoke. By using graves and posters showing the loss of money, it makes it pretty cliché. So i’m going for something different so it makes people think that they are destroying themself bit by bit.

Improvements

This video of an 8-Bit Atari Breakout game is where i got my sound effects from, these are the original game sound effects from the Atari game. I downloaded the video from YouTube and placed it into Premiere Pro, here i used in and out points to separate the sound effects which i then placed into my video making sure the sound played exactly when the ball made contact with the cigarette and the brick.

This was my poster originally, i was going to keep it black and white because it keeps the colour scheme simple but then i thought that it looked too boring personally and so i found a picture of the original Atari Breakout and used their colour scheme to make it look more interesting

nhs smoking poster

This is the poster with most things added to it, but without any typography so far. I want to keep it very simple but need to have some of the logos.

Screen Shot 2015-10-21 at 15.53.28

This is the picture of Atari Breakout game which i used the pipette tool for, i clicked onto the colour on the original game and placed it into my lung shape. I made sure i did 3 layers of each colour to make it equal. I also used the colour of the quit squad logo because i ran out of colours on the original game, so instead of getting another shade of purple i just used the quit squad colour to keep the colour scheme simple.

When i put it into After Effects i made sure that all the bricks were individual layers so that i can make sure the bricks that get hit can disappear, and also for later purposes in case i want to add something else to my poster which would require the layers to be individual.

Screen Shot 2015-11-10 at 3.55.48 PM

This is the basis of my poster. The colour has been added to my poster but and also everything is pretty much in place. I noticed that i needed to add a tag line to send a message across to the audience and i also need to add the Preston’s College logo at the bottom along with the Quit Squad logo and the NHS poster.

Screen Shot 2015-11-10 at 3.56.10 PM

These are all the layers that i have which i have named so its easier to tell which layer is which. These are the layers that i will be animating and so knowing what colours they are and where they are positioned will make it a lot easier for me to animate my poster.

When the ball makes contact with the brick i have made sure that the brick will disappear.

Evaluation

From a critical point of view, my poster has included a very basic amount of information. I tried to focus my poster more on the imagery instead of adding loads of writing because i wanted it to be as simple as possible because i think that simple is effective. I think that the strong points about my poster is the photoshop skills of being able to turn a pair of lungs into bricks, i also think that the idea is very creative because it is the idea of you destroying yourself because only you can control it like the game ‘Breakout’. This gives it a personal touch and makes the reader feel like they are the only one in control and if they want to stop then they will have to do it themselves. Personally, i think that the animation that i did was very strong, i made it look very retro and added in a lot of layers which i have shown in the build up to my final piece and also sound effects and extra visual effects for the break of the bricks at the end and i had a nice colour scheme going on which i used from a version of ‘Breakout’. Altogether, it is a very strong idea but if i was to do it again i would definitely change the font for my tag line ‘Only Destroying Yourself’ because that for me is very basic and weak when i should’ve made it a very retro font. Also, another thing that i would change is i would add a block banner as a coloured layer underneath the logo’s because the two middle logos get a bit lost in the black because the logos are dark blue. These would be my only changes but aside from that, i think it is a very strong poster.
